PoPedit is the program I
use to create my art, and it was created by Dane. In this small
lesson I will explain the main screens in PoPedit, and will
create a piece of art step by step.
PoPedit, has 2 main windows the edit window and the show window :

This is the edit window, and is the window where we create our
art. In this window you will find the color selector, you can
choose the foreground color with a click on your left mouse
button, and the background color with a click on the right mouse
button.
The buttons under the color selector is from left to right :
![]()
This is the open button, used to get files already saved on your
harddisk. Clicking this button will bring up a standard win95
file open dialog.
![]()
This is the save button, clicking it, it will bring up a standard
Win95 save dialog. If a file in mIRC or PIRCH format is
determined by the settings under setup.
![]()
Clicking this button will activate the browser feature in
PoPedit. The browser is a feature that lets you scroll your
textfiles in an very easy way.
![]()
Clicking this button will show your picture in your show window,
just as it would look put in a channel on irc.
![]()
Clicking this button will show your picture in your show window,
just as it would look if someone clicked and dragged your picture
in a channel.
![]()
Clicking this button will emulate popeplayer, and play the text
into your show window using the speed you put in the speed box
(the box saying 1500 here).
![]()
This is the sound emulation part. Use the speaker button to
select your sound, adjust the speed, and use the emulator button.
PoPedit, can calculate a play speed calculated using the text you
have in the edit window, and the sound file you have loaded, this
is done clicking the small a button. To make the sound play
together with the text file, just check the little box.
![]()
Clicking this button PoPedit will bring up a character map, where
you can easily click the special chars you want. Clicking a char
will put that char into the edit window, at the current cursor
position.
![]()
Clicking this is similar to clicking CTRL-U, it will place an
underline control char into the edit window at the current cursor
position.
![]()
Clicking this is similar to clicking CTRL-B, it will place a bold
control char into the edit window at the current cursor position.
![]()
These 2 buttons are used to place the color control codes in the
edit window. Use the pencil to place just the foreground color
and the brush to place both fore and background color.
![]()
Clicking this will bring up the about box.
![]()
This button is used to exit popedit.
In the menu line you will find the same functions, there are 2
more things in the menu line that I would like you to notice :

Clicking this will bring up the setup box used in PoPedit. In
this you can type what nicks to use when testing your art, and
what program to save the files for.

In this menu you will find the variables, supportet by PoPedit,
you will have to remember only to use the variables your text
player supports. If you are using mIRC, then I would suggest that
you use PPPlayer, the official player for PoPedit.

This is the show window, also called the PoPePlayer emulator.
This is where you will see the art you are creating.
This will not be an example on how to make
great big art, I am not that creative, but I will show a small
simple welcome back art. I will use the %az variable for the
nickname. The %az is like $1 but where the lenght of $1 depends
on the nick selected the %az will always be 12 chars long.
First I make the simple picture using my keyboard in the edit
window :

As I said maybe not the greatest art, the next step I normally do
is to select the background, and first foreground color on a
line, then placing the color codes on every single line :

Notice how the drawing now seems misaligned, this is because the
color codes do not always take up the same room. But when played
into a channel the color codes will take no room at all making
everything look good again.
I now hit the show button, to see how it would look in the
channel :

As it shows the colors are there, but it doesn't look that good,
the background color stops where the line end's and are not at
all aligned. Using PoPedit this is simple to correct, all I need
to do is add spaces on the end of the lines. PoPedit will convert
these spaces to a character that is taking up room.
After adding spaces the image shown will look like this :

Now it looks much better, I could continue adding colors and
stuff to it, but I kinda like it simple. Now I click the save
button to save my work :

After I enter the name and click ok, the work is saved at ready
to use on IRC.
