On this page we will try to cover the topics of
using colors in mIRC, and show the special characters, that can
be used.
This page will not show how to make a 50 line color text file,
but will only cover the use of colors on simple lines. These
lines
could be used in popups, but coloring huge text files and making
popups is done the same way, so what we show
here, will also make you able to experiment on, and make larger
files to play.
If you want to make colorfull popups, I would suggest that you
first read the page about doing popups.
In mIRC you can use 16 colors they are numbered from 0 (zero) to
15, all 16 colors can be used as foreground and background
colors. the 16 colors are :
0 white, 1
black, 2 blue, 3 green, 4 lightred,
5 brown, 6 purple,
7 orange, 8 yellow
9 lightgreen, 10 cyan, 11 lightcyan,
12 lightblue, 13 pink, 14 grey,
15 lightgrey
The color 7 that should be orange, can on some computers look
like a brownish shade, mostly it is because the computer is
running 256 colors, this only means that if you use orange then
what you see can be different from what others might see.
The difference :

Here is a view over the different colors foreground and
background :

When you want to use colors you can set the colors in 2 ways, you
can set the foreground color keeping the current background
color, or you can set both the foreground and the background
color.
The "key" for both methods are the color code, to set a
color code you press CTRL then press down "k" and
release the 2
keys, this will make a black square, this is the color code and
all color work, is done using this. This color code will from now
on be called ctrl-k on this page.
Now lets use the ctrl-k code and change some colors, the 2
formats are :
Change foreground, keep background : ctrl-k#
Change foreground, and background : ctrl-k#,#
Where # is a number from the color table. You can change the
colors everywhere on a line.
Lets look at some examples :
If I want red text on white background, I would type ctrl-k4,0
and the text I want to say :
![]()
The | in the image is the cursor, notice the black square in
front of 4,0, that is how ctrl-k looks in mIRC, allso notice that
the
complete color code do not take room on the line when displayed
in the channel.
If I want to change the foreground color to blue in the middle of
the line, I just add the right color code
![]()
If I want the last word with yellow (8) foreground and black (1)
background, I just add the ctrl-k8,1 infront of the word.
![]()
The way to use the colors in popups, are just like using them on
the type line, here is an example of a simple popup using colors.
Remember the black square is the ctrl.

When using this popup in the channel it will look like :
![]()
Characters
When you are using colors either to do popups, or text files, you
might think that pure text gets a little boring. Besides the
normal
letters there are special characters in the fonts, and you can
use them for small drawings or to add effects. Though you have to
remember that not all the special characters are in all the
fonts, and if people don't have the font you use, it wont look
right on their
computer. Most people are using the fonts fixedsys or courier, on
this page I have made a view over the special characters in
fixedsys.
You cannot find the key for most of these keys on your keyboard,
so you will have to type them by their character number. You
do this by pressing down the Alt key, and type the number while
holding Alt down, when you have typed all the digits (including
the 0's) in the character number you release the Alt key, and the
character should appear.
Here are the list of special characters in fixed sys and their
character number :

Using these you are able to add somthing extra to your popups,
here are a couple of simple examples, where we have used colors
and special characters together :

In the channel those would look like :

We do hope this short lesson will help you create and enjoy the
possibillities in mIRC.
